Head of department a.i.: Michiel Dusar

Mission :

  1. A public service, by arranging all available information into a Documentation Centre for Earth Sciences
  2. The organisation of research projects in the framework of its « Research and Development » programs

This mission is accomplished through the following activities and projects :

  • Maintenance of a data base (GeoDoc) with information about the Belgian subsoil (actually more than 150.000 observation points)
  • Use of this GeoDoc information for delivering technical advice about resources, groundwater, underground storage, energetic resources, CO2 storage, geothermal energy etc. to government agencies, industry and individual citizens.
  • Research programs in collaboration with the Regions -especially concerning the revised geological maps - and in collaboration with national, European and international scientific organisations
  • Protection and promotion of the geological heritage of Belgium

Collections :

To keep the collection of rock samples from outcrops and boreholes at the disposal of all researchers

Public Library :

Documentation centre (with 70.000 books and periodicals and more than 11.000 maps Making the GeoDoc information available (partly in digital form).

Publications :

National centre for the edition of scientific publications on the subsurface of Belgium. Diffusion of information in different publication series : Professional Papers, Memoirs, Geologica Belgica and geological maps.

The department is divided in two sections :

  • Section 16. General Geology and Mineralogy

  • Section 17. Applied Geology and Geo-Information
