The 10th international meeting of the ASWA-working group will be held in Brussels, from June 28th to June 30th 2011, at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), Vautierstraat 29, Brussels – Belgium (RBINS). This meeting will be followed on July 1st by a workshop on animal exploitation in Neolithic Central and Western Anatolia.

> 10th ASWA Meeting

The ASWA working group (http://www.alexandriaarchive.org/icaz/workaswa.htm, this site opens in a new window) was created in 1990, during the 6th International Conference of the ‘International Council of Archaeozoology’, in Washington D.C. (USA). The purpose of this working group is to stimulate the communication between researchers working on animal remains from archaeological sites in the Near East and adjacent areas (including eastern Europe, northern Africa, central Asia and southern Asia). The meetings are organised every two years.

The meetings deal with a wide range of topics related to the human-animal interactions, including, among others, the process of domestication and the management of domestic animals, extinctions, hunting practices, and the role of animals in ritual, as well as various methodological issues. Moreover, contributions are not limited to purely archaeozoological studies, but researchers using biochemical, stable isotopes, and DNA-analyses, and statistical methods are also encouraged to present their results. Periods under investigation range from the Pleistocene up to sub-recent times.

> Workshop “Animal exploitation in Neolithic Central and Western Anatolia”

This workshop will provide an opportunity for researchers working on central and western Anatolian prehistoric sites to share current interpretations of animal management and to discuss the possibilities for data sharing and synthesizing a major work describing the origins and spread (and chronology) of animal management technologies in these closely linked regions.

A number of invited speakers will present and discuss their research. All participants in the ASWA meeting are welcome to attend and participate in the discussions.
